The Artistic Journey of Sebastian Ulz - March Fourth Friday

Capturing Moments, Creating Memories: The Artistic Journey of Sebastian Ulz

Nine years ago, I picked up a camera for the first time. What started as a simple fascination with capturing family moments quickly turned into a lifelong passion for freezing time. Photography became more than just a medium—it became a way to relive memories, to hold onto fleeting emotions, and to tell stories without words.

But my connection to art goes back even further. Before photography, dance was my first creative language. Movement and rhythm filled my childhood, shaping how I saw the world. My mother always joked that I danced before I could walk, and maybe she was right. Music, movement, and the energy of life have always been at the core of my creativity. When I eventually transitioned from dance to photography, it wasn’t about leaving one art form behind—it was about finding another way to express that same energy.

Anchorage: A Creative Playground

Growing up in Alaska has been a blessing as an artist. Every direction holds inspiration, from the snow-covered peaks to the midnight sun. The landscapes, the changing seasons, the moments of quiet solitude—all of it influences my work. Here, creativity isn’t confined to a studio; it thrives in the wild, in the unpredictable, in the vastness of nature.

That’s what excites me most about my upcoming Fourth Friday art show at The 49th Supply Co. This is my first show in seven years and only my second ever. It’s a chance to share my latest work, to let people step into my world and see the moments I’ve captured through my lens. Every image tells a story—of adventure, of nostalgia, of the beauty in the ordinary. I hope that, as people walk through the gallery, they feel something. A connection. A memory. An inspiration to see the world differently.

Beyond Photography: Building a Creative Movement

My journey as an artist isn’t just about my own work—it’s about creating space for others to thrive. That’s why I started Homesck, a movement rooted in creativity. Anchorage is filled with talent, but opportunities for artists can feel limited. Too often, creatives feel like they have to leave to make an impact. But I believe in the future of this city’s art scene. I want to connect artists, foster collaboration, and prove that we don’t have to go elsewhere to be seen.

One of my upcoming projects is the Tiny Forest Concert—inspired by the famous Tiny Desk Concerts, but with an Alaskan twist. Instead of an office, I’ll be taking musicians into the heart of nature, filming live performances against breathtaking landscapes. It’s about blending music, art, and the outdoors into something uniquely powerful.

What’s Next?

This Fourth Friday event is just the beginning. I’m eager to showcase more work, push creative boundaries, and continue building a movement that uplifts artists in Anchorage and beyond. My goal isn’t just to create art—it’s to create experiences, to inspire others to embrace their creativity, and to remind people that every moment, no matter how small, is worth capturing.

For those who visit the show, I hope you walk away feeling something. Whether it’s nostalgia, inspiration, or a newfound appreciation for the world around you, that’s what art is all about—connecting us to emotions we didn’t even realize we needed to feel.

See you March 28th for Fourth Friday. Let’s celebrate creativity together.
